Empty Closet = Sewing New Tops

Prompted by the fact that I have almost nothing "nice" to wear this season, I managed to get some sewing done this week. Since I can only stand for limited amounts of time because of my injury, tracing new patterns is not an option for me for a while. So I used 2 of my tried and true patterns, HotPatterns Weekender Sunshine Top, and HotPatterns Metropolitan GoodTimes Top.
The gray Weekender Sunshine Top, shown above, is made from a luscious wool/cashmere blend sweater knit. I made the neckband a little wider and lengthened the short sleeves to full length. I am thrilled with the way it turned out..it feels so luxurious! If you have this pattern, do try it with long sleeves for the fall/winter. If you don't have this pattern, it's really worth a try. It's so flattering..makes your waist look tiny and that's always a good thing!   I made this style several times last spring, and wrote a step-by-step tutorial about how to sew it. It can be found HERE.

Earlier in the week, I made 2 versions of the Metropolitan GoodTimes Top. The olive green version is made from a wool/cashmere blend sweater knit. The blue print version is made from cotton/lycra jersey, and features shirred sleeves.  I am so happy to have some nice new tops...now I just have to muster up enough energy to sew a few more tops, some slacks, and I'll be all set for this season...maybe :)
Sewing Notes: The band and yokes on all the tops are interfaced with Pro-Sheer Elegance Fusible Interfacing. The Sweater Knit yardage has been in my 'stash' for a long time, it was from
Baer Fabrics, now out of business.
The Cotton/Lycra Jersey is from Fabric.com.

  5. love the grey one! i have not tried any of the hot patterns because i thought they would be too big for me. do you think the smallest size would fit me?

  6. Yes the gray one is my favorite too :)

Teri...The smallest size is their size 6. You can download their size charts here-
    http://www.hotpatterns.com/size-chart
it's very comprehensive, with center front length, front shoulder width, back shoulder width, neck circumference..and many other measurements not usually found on most patterns.
Just as quick example HotPatterns size 6 is drafted for a Bust circumference of 32", Under-bust of 26", *Natural* Waist of 24, Hip circumference of 34"

My sister is about 105lbs, 5'1" tall, and wears a size 2 in RTW. I make a size 6 for her in HotPatterns, but have to do a full bust adjustment.

  7. Your tops are so elegant. Put those tops in an upscale retail store, and not many people could afford to purchase them. Simply beautiful.

  8. The shirts you did here (especially the gray) are so much more attractive than the ones shown in the HotPatterns videos. Now I want to try the pattern!

  9. Your weekender sunshine top tutorial was a big help to me this summer. Now your long sleeve version is a big inspiration!

I hope you feel better soon.

  10. I'm going to have to pickup the Sunshine top. Super cute!

I'm so bitter about losing Baer. Louisville just isn't the same for fabric anymore :(

Are there pattern drafing details necessary in lengthening a sleeve, or can one simply lengthen the side seams to the desired length?

    Thank You
    Marie

  12. Hi Marie...I just lengthened the short sleeve by extending the seam lines to my desired length.

However, if you have a knit pattern sleeve you really like, just match the underarm points and blend the HotPattens sleeve lines to match the sleeve you like. If you are a very confident sewist, you can do this as you cut it out. Or you can trace a new pattern. The key is to maintain the shape of the entire HotPatterns sleeve's cap.

  14. Great tops, Pam. I will be buying the Sunshine pattern for sure! I would not have given that top a second look but your version is adorable. I like the wider band and the long sleeves, too!

Pam, I'm so glad that you're taking time to make beautiful things for yourself, since you do so much for your nieces. These are gorgeous - I especially love the gray one. I didn't really like this one when I saw the pattern on the hot patterns website but seeing it made up makes me think I may have to reconsider it.

  21. I am in love with your long sleeve version of the Sunshine top. I had JUST placed an order for my first two HotPatterns patterns (boy is that awkward) when I saw your top. I REALLY wish I had gotten that one also!! If only they weren't so darn expensive!!! The fabric you used also looks gorgeous. I am totally jealous.
