Ladies and gentlemen, Vogue 8800 is a winner!
This is the pattern-- Vogue 8800. It is very straightforward...a simple style that is easy to sew.
It is a slightly contoured (fitted) casual shirt, without being too tight. And the only alteration I had to make was to lengthen the sleeves. The short sleeves are quite short, which is a good look on a younger man. However in my opinion, too short for a middle aged man. I made this shirt for Roger in a size 40...he is a trim man in his mid-fifties. I lengthened the sleeve pattern by a full inch, and he still thinks they are a bit too short. So I advise to check the sleeve length before cutting.
This shirt gets my stamp of approval
because the important drafting details are WONDERFUL !
LOOK... The collar is curved! The yoke where it joins the back is curved! The back where it joins the yoke is curved! The 3 things I look for in a good shirt draft are all here in Vogue 8800.
Vogue has given us the most important thing...a very good draft!

ReplyDeleteHowever, he doesn't like his shirts to be fitted around the middle at all, can I just widen the part of the pattern that goes around his middle? He's not overweight, he just doesn't like anything tight or feels like it could be 'not loose'. I don't know if that makes sense lol but I will go buy this pattern and make him some shirts!!

ReplyDeleteI'm having trouble sewing in the sleeves. Wanted to use David Coffin's flat fell method, but this pattern seems not to have a 1:1 ratio. Did you encounter about an inch of ease on shirt back?
ReplyDeleteAnon, I sewed this shirt so long ago, that I cannot remember if I had an issue with sleeve ease.
ReplyDeleteYou can move some of the ease past the notch...distributing some of it into the curved part of the armscye.

Dear all, this patter (or at least the copy I have) has an error. The small circles on pattern piece #5, the collar, are not equidistant from the centerline. Therefore, when you pin the front facings, you will be frustrated that the pieces don't align. I don't remember which side is correct, but I do remember that the circle further out form the centerline aligns correctly. The other circle is nearly 1cm too close to the centre. Other than that, the pattern sews nicely. I am in Europe so I prefer a tighter fit, so I would definitely suggest measuring as this pattern fits quite casually. For a more fitted look, V8889 is a much tougher pattern, but well worth the effort.
